Great adaptation of the Memory Palace to Spanish

This is an awesome book for anyone wanting to learn Spanish quickly. I'm well acquainted with various memory techniques but I've been wondering how to adapt them when I try to learn a language. Now I don't need to - Anthony Metivier has done it already.
This is a very easy book to read and it explains everything simply. First the basic Memory Palace technique and how to create your own, and then how to use it to memorize your Spanish vocabulary.
The things I like about this book are that there are plenty of examples and clear explanations, advice on mistakes to avoid, action steps at the end of chapters which are a good summary of the material, a couple of tips on memorizing grammar, and advice on choosing words to add to your vocabulary.
If you enjoy banging your head against a brick wall by using basic repetition to learn a language, you should go and buy any of the thousands of average language courses and books in the market.
If you want to learn Spanish quickly and be amazed at what your memory can do, you should buy this book.

Very useful

This book has really helped me advance my vocabulary. I understand Spanish grammar rules well enough, but have always struggled with remembering new words. The technique requires a bit of time and effort at first, but you only have to do it once and if you really want to build your vocabulary, it will save you a lot of time later on. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to become fluent in Spanish.

Creative method for memorizing

I am a learner of English at the beginning and after about nine years of English learning I started to learn Spanish.
I found that it is very helpful to associate the meaning of Spanish words with that of the English. When I memorize the vocabulary of both Spanish and English,I found that if I don't make some initial mnemonics, next time I encounter the words I won't be likely to retrieve them correctly and what I remember is merely the fact that I have learned it.So I realize that the hard and boring rote won't help a lot,and I slightly browsed Amazon for something helpful,and luckily got this one.

The author's creative skills on memorizing Spanish words is essentially based on the mnemonics called Loci system,which is associate memory with location. Although the seeming extra effort makes things more complicated,it is still noteworthy that successful retrieving is everyone's ultimate purpose when memorizing words,and that would not usually happen if one didn't memorize the words profoundly in the first place. The author provides an creative way to do that. The methods is roughly to categorize associate by location and imaging,and actually these two methods are often utilized in mnemonics and are very helpful in my opinion.

I highly recommend this book because it provides a novel way to memorize words in stead of rote.

Best books for teaching children to read

Primary phonics are among the most dull-looking books on the market, yet they thoroughly teach chidren how to read quickly and effectively. Not only did they work with my three children, I recommended them to other people (8 children total). For four year olds, ALL of them advanced from sets 1 to 5 in 4 months!. All of the children entered kindergarten reading at a second grade level! The books are amazingly effective!

About the Author
Xiaodong Dai is Associate Professor of the Foreign Languages College of Shanghai Normal University, P. R. China. He is a Fulbrighter and serves as the Vice President of China Association for Intercultural Communication (CAFIC). His research interests include identity negotiation, intercultural communication competence and intercultural dialogue. His most recent books are Identity and Intercultural Communication: Theoretical and Contextual Construction (co-edited with Steve J. Kulich), Intercultural Communication Theories, and Intercultural Adaptation: Theoretical Explorations and Empirical Studies (co-edited with Steve J. Kulich). Guo-Ming Chen is Professor of Communication Studies at the University of Rhode Island. He is the Executive Director of the International Association for Intercultural Communication Studies and the co-editor of China Media Research. His primary research interests are in intercultural/organizational/global communication. Chen has published numerous papers and books, including Foundations of Intercultural Communication, A Study of Intercultural Communication Competence, Communication and Global Society, and Theories and Principles of Chinese Communication.

Fabulous overview of Cross-Cultural Teaching

There's lots of books out there on teaching, and lots of books on multiculturalism, but FINALLY a book that addresses each area from the other's perspective! This book deals with the nuts and bolts of different cultures, but it also comes from an academic perspective, including the research and citations to back it up. Written by two PhDs with the practical knowledge to back up the scholarship, this gave me the answers I needed for working with my inner city/multicultural church groups. It's very readable, and reasonably priced. I'm delighted with it and recommend it highly.

A must have for cross-cultural teachers

Judith and Sherwood Lingenfelter's work Teaching Cross-Culturally seeks to accomplish four goals. The first is to help teachers understand their own culture of teaching and learning. The second is to help teachers become effective teachers in another culture by becoming good learners. The third goal is to help teachers reflect on cultural differences and conflicts with others by considering perspectives taught in Scripture and faith in Christ. The final goal reflects the others in that the Lingenfelter's want teachers to have fun and enjoy teaching in other cultures and feel like they are taking part in fulfilling the Great Commission.

One of the more helpful aspects of this book is it helps teachers to consider their own cultural biases and how those biases affect their teaching style in cultural settings different from their own. These cultural biases reflect not only one's family background but also one's own educational background. Cultural differences can be seen in a variety of settings ranging from the difference between an inner city school and a rural school to the difference between an American International School and a native school setting. This issue is important because many teachers don't fully realize how much their teaching styles are influenced by their own cultural backgrounds.

This book also helps the potential cross-cultural teacher to consider different learning styles and settings in non-western settings. One is reminded that in many non-western settings learning is often more of a community event than an individual pursuit. So, one needs to understand the role of a teacher in these kinds of setting will differ based on where they are. The Lingenfelter's also help teachers re-evaluate their expectations and consider which may be valid and which are false. Too many false expectations lead to negative teaching experiences.

To teach effectively in a cross-cultural situation then is to learn about the culture one is in and then adapt one's teaching style to that culture. This is reflected in the life and ministry of Jesus Christ who set the ultimate example of adapting to different cultural situations to most effectively reach those around him. The potential cross-cultural teacher needs to follow the example Christ set before them.

Fresh Insights from a Missionary's Perspective

After ministering cross-culturally for 6 years and returning back to America for MDiv training, I found the Lingenfelters' book to offer insights in teaching that I have not seen in the US or abroad. There are concepts here in this book that is omitted by modern educational psychology predominantly because the western educational system is confined in the prison (pg 19) of an anglo-western worldview. A broader scope is required not only abroad, but even more so at home, when our schools are filling with young students from a vast array of cultures, economic backgrounds, and so forth.

The premise of the book is for teachers to learn to be incarnational in their multiethnic classrooms. What this means is essentially learning to recognize our standard western method and to let go of it by adopting an `other-culture' perspective. Biblically, this concept follows the Apostle Paul's example in becoming weak for the weak, Jews for the Jews, etc (I Cor 9:18-25).

Something fresh that the Linderfelters added to their teaching was 4 types of teachers around the globe (chpt 6). As I ministered cross culturally in Asia and Africa, I found the style of teaching so different from my western method, but accurately reflecting their cultural setting. Thus, the role of a teacher will vary as one travels abroad, or the expectations of the student regarding the teachers role will vary in a multiethnic classroom. This is why the description of 4-types of teachers the Lingerfelters incorporate into their book makes the book worth buying!

In conclusion, I would add that I found insights in almost every chapter. I am challenged now to think, as a teacher, how I can recognize the needs in my classroom better and how I can be an incarnational teacher to a multiethnic class room.

The goal of NCI caBIG™ is to create a standards based, interoperable network of individuals, applications and data to enhance the pace of cancer research. CaBIG™ uses J2EE and open source standards for all software development work.� This book examines the tools and technologies being developed under caBIG™ to meet the goal of eliminating suffering and death from cancer by 2015 as formulated by the former NCI Director, Dr. Andrew von Eschenbach.In doing so, it provides a vignette into the efforts of thousands of people – molecular biologists, medical practitioners, software developers, to name a few - across the country to bring the promise of translational research to individuals with cancer.

From a software perspective, a functional approach is used to teach the Java platform and its features for enterprise-level application development. Under this approach, the various syntactical and operative elements of the language and any software libraries that have been used (for example, BioJava, Apache, etc.) are taught not in isolation but in the context of discrete definable research problems that enable the user to relate how the different parts of the language fit together in the big picture. All examples are derived from practical problems faced in biomedical/clinical data retrieval and analysis during routine bioinformatics and cancer research. Further, the book illustrates how individual bioinformatics applications (such as BLAST and Genscan) can be stitched together into a pipeline so that users can direct the output of one tool (for example, gene predictions using Genscan) to perform further analysis (say, homology searching using BLAST).

Good resource but probably overpriced

This book is more about how to write Java applications that connect to existing systems (such as BLAST) that Bioinformatics and Biomedical professionals already use, rather than how to write Java versions of those systems, the algorithms used in those systems, or algorithms generally relevant to the mentioned fields. While teaching someone to write Java applications that could send data, request service, and parse then display the results received from the queried systems is useful, such a book probably does not warrant such a high price tag as a book that teaches one how to write Java versions of algorithms useful for the Bioinformatics and Biomedical fields.

Excellent Book

Finally, a book that introduces bioinformatics using Java. While Perl is great for pattern matching and basic scripting, it is not at all an ideal choice for complex bioinformatics applications at all levels of complexity. Books like this one help train a new generation of bioinformatics experts with a broad-based training in computing (not just Perl scripting).
