About the Author
Philip Zimbardo

Philip Zimbardo is internationally recognized as the “voice and face of contemporary American psychology” through his widely seen PBS-TV series, Discovering Psychology, his classic research, The Stanford Prison Experiment, authoring the oldest current textbook in psychology, Psychology and Life, in its 18th Edition, and his popular trade books on Shyness in adults and in children; Shyness: What it is, what to do about it, and The Shy Child. Past president of the American Psychological Association, and the Western Psychological Association.

Zimbardo has been a Stanford University professor since 1968 (now an Emeritus Professor), having taught previously at Yale, NYU, and Columbia University. He is currently on the faculty of the Pacific Graduate School of Psychology, and the Naval Postgraduate School at Monterey, CA. He has been given numerous awards and honors as an educator, researcher, writer, and service to the profession. Recently, he was awarded the Vaclav Havel Foundation Prize for his lifetime of research on the human condition. His more than 300 professional publications and 50 books convey his research interests in the domain of social psychology, with a broad spread of interests from shyness to time perspective, madness, cults, political psychology, torture, terrorism, and evil.

Zimbardo has served also as the Chair of the Council of Scientific Society Presidents (CSSP) representing 63 scientific, math and technical associations (with 1.5 million members), and now is Chair of the Western Psychological Foundation. He heads a philanthropic foundation in his name to promote student education in his ancestral Sicilian towns. Zimbardo adds further to his retirement list activities: serving as the new executive director of a Stanford center on terrorism -- the Center for Interdisciplinary Policy, Education, and Research on Terrorism (CIPERT). He was an expert witness for one of the soldiers in the Abu Ghraib Prison abuses, and has studied the interrogation procedures used by the military in that and other prisons as well as by Greek and Brazilian police torturers.

Noted for his personal and professional efforts to actually 'give psychology away to the public', Zimbardo has also been a social-political activist, challenging the U.S. Government's wars in Vietnam and Iraq, as well as the American Correctional System.

Robert L. Johnson

Robert Johnson, Ph.D., taught introductory psychology for 28 years at Umpqua Community College. He is especially interested in applying psychological principles to the teaching of psychology and in encouraging linkages between psychology and other disciplines. In keeping with those interests, Bob founded the Pacific Northwest Great Teachers Seminar, of which he was the director for 20 years. He was also one of the founders of�Psychology Teachers at Community Colleges (PT@CC), serving as its executive committee chair during 2004. That same year he also received the Two-Year College Teaching Award given by the Society for the Teaching of Psychology. Bob has long been active in APA, APS, the Western Psychological Association, and the Council of Teachers of Undergraduate Psychology.

Aside from his contributions as coauthor of Psychology: Core Concepts, Bob is particularly proud of his articles in Teaching of Psychology. Recently he began a term as editor of The General Psychologist, the newsletter of the Society for General Psychology (Division 1 of APA). And, he is working on a book that brings to light what Shakespeare had to say about psychology.

Bob and his wife live on the North Umpqua River in Southern Oregon, where they can go kayaking in their front yard or bicycling in the valleys of the Cascade Mountains. In his spare time he likes making pottery and Thai curries.

Vivian McCann�

Vivian McCann, a senior faculty member in Psychology at Portland Community College in Portland, Oregon, teaches a wide variety of courses, including introductory psychology, human relations, intimate relationships, and social psychology. Born and raised in the California desert just 10 miles from the Mexican border, she learned early on the importance of understanding cultural backgrounds and values in effective communication and in teaching, which laid the foundation for her current interest in teaching and learning psychology from diverse cultural perspectives. She loves to travel and learn about people and cultures, and to nurture the same passions in her students: She has led groups of students on three trips abroad, and in her own travels has visited 20 countries so far.

Vivian maintains a strong commitment to teaching excellence, and has developed and taught numerous workshops in that area. She currently serves on the APA’s Committee for Psychology Teachers at Community Colleges (PT@CC), and is an active member of the Western Psychological Association and APS. She is also the author of Human Relations: The Art and Science of Building Effective Relationships.

The book is good, mypsychlab is a valuable tool

The writing style of the book is casual and friendly. The authors seemed to go out of their way to create a text that was accessible. Throughout the book they speak directly to the reader, have sections on "how to use psychology to learn psychology" and make a point to provide a variety of ways (via mypsychlab) to deliver information. Because they're psychologists, they know that people have different learning styles and they try to help you.

The access code is well worth it. My experience in getting to the mypsychlab was fraught with difficulty and incompetence.
- Access to the audio book of the textbook. This was a huge win for me. It is streaming audio only, which is sad. I would love to be able to listen to it in the car during my commute or while exercising.
- Flash card game. You can select the chapters, you can choose a quiz option, and you can print out the flash cards.YOU CAN PRINT THEM OUT! They even make the game accessible to your smartphone. It's not an app though. It should be an app.
- Study guides. For people who have trouble knowing how to take notes from the book or from lecture, the study guides address this with directed note taking outlines. There are glossary lists for you to look up definitions, chapter quizzes to help you prepare.
- Links to the podcast, which anyone can get to - the psych files.
- access to eText. This is downloadable.

Some complaints:
- The pages of the text are thin.
- The customer service at Pearson was very hit or miss. The third person I reached was able to give me the correct answer, that I needed my professor to provide a course id to me.
- You can't download the audio book.
- The flash card game should be an app.

This is a good, topical, up to date text. Great for an intro book with enough detail and general stuff to cover the basics. The My Psych Lab does not come with either the book or the e-book. It has to be purchased separately these days.

Shantanu Tushar is an advanced GNU/Linux user since his college days. He works as an application developer and contributes to the software in the KDE projects.

Shantanu has been fascinated by computers since he was a child, and spent most of his high school time writing C code to perform daily activities. Since he started using GNU/Linux, he has been using shell scripts to make the computer do all the hard work for him. He also takes time to visit students at various colleges to introduce them to the power of Free Software, including its various tools. A book you should have handy when starting Linux shell scripting

I have started using Linux in 2000 with Suse Linux. Coming from Windows Linux right away took my interest especially the tremendous freedom it gives you and the ability to operate the system instead of being operated by the system. But if you want to get into the depth of Linux and being an expert the learning curve especially when starting is quite steep and the huge amount of possibilities is hard to tackle. But if you go over this hurdle than you get rewarded with the knowledge of how to rule your computer. You can do it the hard way as I did when starting with Linux by asking Google for each and every question coming up. But if you want to accelerate to get into understanding and using Linux not only on the surface than this book is for you.

The book is precisely focused on shell scripting and is therefore always right to the point. So you won't find information on how to install Linux but as this is one of the easier parts you can find a lot of good information on the internet and nowadays setting up a Linux machine is quite easy.

If you have Linux installed this book helps you to jump right into the topic. In the introduction of chapter 1 you get the basics about the shell environment you need just enough to start scripting. For example it is explained what does the prompt look like, the structure of a shell script and how to start it. And some handy information to avoid unnecessary typing using the history.

After the introduction of each chapter the book starts with recipes. Each recipe is introduced with a short objective of a recipe and then it has more or less always the same structure. Getting ready gives a brief overview of the commands and syntax used in the following sections. How to do it shows how the commands are used that support the objective. The explanation is done on practical and real life examples that can be used in your day to day work. In some recipes you get also deeper information in the But there is more section that can be skipped at a first read and referenced later when topic comes up in combination with other recipes.

As this book's title denotes the content is presented as a cookbook. In a cookbook you can assume to jump into a specific topic and than just program along. But I would recommend before starting to read the first chapter as it explains all basic elements of a shell script like variable assignment, arrays, functions and other programming structures as well as debugging tools and strategies. After chapter 1 you have enough information to tackle the recipes in following chapters.

Chapter 2 and chapter 3 provide a comprehensive set of recipes on file manipulation. Chapter 2 is more focused on recipes you will need in your day to day work, like finding, copying and moving files. Chapter 3 has more sophisticated recipes like file comparison to find out the differences between two files.

Chapter 4 is about the content of files, that is finding and manipulating the content of a file. The chapter starts with an introduction into regular expressions and some often used patterns like e-mail address validation are provided.

Especially interesting to me was chapter 5 which goes beyond the Linux operating system but shows how to use shell scripting for accessing the web. I liked the recipe about cURL, a very sophisticated and comprehensive tool for accessing the web through a lot of different web protocols. This recipe gives you a kick start into cURL with the commands you will use 80% of your time when down or uploading files from or to the web or another file system.

The book does not only cover topics you would need as a regular Linux user but also provides recipes for administration tasks. And from my experience the book covers the main commands that you would need to administer your private Linux home network to keep it up and running. The chapters 6, 8 and 9 cover backup tools, tools for monitoring you system and manipulating or running automatically scheduled processes with cron jobs.

And finally chapter 7 has a lot to say about setting up a network. The topics cover file transfer between computers or logging in to remote computers using ssh.

If you are a programmer of a programming language that uses a lot the Linux shell like Python, Ruby or Ruby on Rails than I also can recommend this book. It covers the topics you will need when mainly working with the console and not using an IDE. Especially useful I consider in this regard the topics how to find files, how to compare files, how to find a specific content of a file that you need to refactor. SSH without login is also very useful when working with Ruby on Rails and administrating an application server like passenger. Also the brief introduction into Git serves as a good start into managing and archiving your source files like the scripts you generate based on the knowledge gained from the book. The section finding broken links on a web site is very helpful when working as a web developer.

So all in all this book is a very helpful companion whether you are using Linux as a regular user or as an administrator. And if you are a developer you find a lot of valuable commands and recipes that make your programming life easier. It is a book you should have handy when you are one of the above mentioned users to make your life easier with Linux.

Very good beginner's guide

I just finished "Linux Shell Scripting Cookbook" (Second Edition) by Shantanu Tushar and Sarath Lakshman. This is a beginner's guide to using shell scripting (bash) on linux.

Usually, a "cookbook" is set up more like a series of projects organized around a set of themes, and is usually less introductory than this book. "Linux Shell Scripting Cookbook" might be better titled "Introduction to Linux Shell Scripting" because it is more like a tutorial and a how too book than like a cookbook. Nonetheless, it is an excellent tutorial that includes over 100 "recipes" that address a diversity of applications. It's just that they are organized more like a tutorial. What this means is that a beginner can use only the resources in this book and get results. The various recipes are organized in an order that brings the reader through basics (like how to use the terminal, how to mess with environment variables, etc.) then on to more complex topics such as regular expressions, manipulating text, accessing web pages, and archiving. One very nice set of scripts that is not often found in intro books addresses networking. The book also covers MySQL database use.

All of the scripts are available from the publisher in a well organized zip archive.

I read the e-version of the book, in iBooks, but the PDF version is very nice as well. I don't know how this would translate as at Kindle book. But, importantly (and this may be more common now than not) the ebook uses all text, unlike some earlier versions of ebooks that used photographs of key text snippets as graphics which essentially renders them useless. Of course, copy and paste from a ebook is difficult, and that is where the zip file of scrips comes in. You can open the PDF file, get the zip archive, and as you read through examples simply open up (or copy and paste) the scripts from the zip archive and modify or run them. Also, the ebook is cheaper than a paper edition and clearly takes up way less space!

If I was going to recommend a starting out guide to shell scripting this is the book I'd recommend right now. It is well organized and well executed.

Great Book

This is one of the best books I have read on Linux scripting. Shantanu, has a straight to the point no fluff writing style. It was straight forward and I was able to read this book in two days because of it. It felt good not having to waste my time with page "filler's" as I have done with most technical books. I commend Shantanu on his efforts and I hope that other ( IT) technical writers take note.

Satan turns Johnny Blaze into a flaming skeleton on a motorcycle

"Ghost Rider" was one of several horror comic books that Marvel put out in the early 1970s where you got hooked on the title because Michael Ploog was drawing the book and then he moved on to something else and it was just not the same with the replacement artist. This happened with "Werewolf By Night," "Monster of Frankenstein," and "Ghost Rider." No wonder the fact that Gene Colan was the artist on "The Tomb of Dracula" from start to finish was one of the reasons that comic book was far and away Marvel's best horror title. Ploog's distinctive style made him ideal for drawing horror titles (only Berni Wrightston was better, but he was working for DC), which is why the four issues of "Marvel Spotlight" that he drew that introduced the character of Ghost Rider are the best in this collection of black & white reprints.

As our saga begins we meet Johnny Blaze, the son of the famous stunt motorcyclist Barton Blaze, who is the headliner at Crash Simpsons' Daredevil Cycle Show. After Barton is killed doing a dangerous stunt, the orphaned Johnny is raised by Crash and his wife Mona. Traumatized by the death of his father it takes Johnny a while to ride one and look death straight in the eye, and when he does at the age of fifteen his motorcycle catches on fire, explodes and kills his foster mother. She makes him promise never to ride in the show. Johnny keeps his promises, but Crash and his daughter Rocky think it is because he is a coward, but Johnny practices on his own (he only promised not to ride in the show, right?). The he learns that Crash Simpson has less than a month to live.

So Johnny calls on Satan to spare Crash from the deadly disease that is killing him. The Prince of Darkness agrees and will be back one day soon to collect his fee. Crash decides to go for the world's cycle jump record (22 cars) and is killed (he did not die from the disease did he?). Johnny then performs the jump himself, which does not exactly endear his to the distraught Rocky, and then Satan shows up and intones: "From this day forth...you will walk the earth as my emissary in the dark hours, and in the light, you will join me in Hades!" Rocky intervenes to send Satan back to Hell, but each night Johnny Blaze becomes a burning skeleton. He just usually wears biker leathers so that all you see is his burning skull.

Actually it is not Satan but the demon lord Mephisto, but we do not learn that for a while and it really does not matter unless you are trying to reconcile the Marvel Universe with Judeo-Christian traditions. What is important is that while Mephisto was forced to leave without Blaze's soul, he was able to graft the essence of the demon Zarathos to Blaze's body. It takes Johnny a while to learn this and he thinks the Ghost Rider is just his own dark side manifested as a burning skeleton. The early stories keep the focus on what is now Johnny Blaze's Daredevil Cycle Show, and Mephisto brings back Crash Simpson as a slave to sacrifice his daughter to his dark lord. Unfortunately, by the time we get to the end of that storyline Ploog has been replaced by Tom Sutton as artist and it is just not the same. Part of the problem is that coming up with stories that bring together Satan and motorcycle each month becomes a bit difficult, which would explain why the comic featured more multi-issue storylines than most Marvel titles. This is why we get stories like "Death Stalks the Demolition Derby" ("Ghost Rider" #4) and our hero riding against the Stunt-Master (#7). Then there is the powerful stranger with the long hair and bear in "Ghost Rider" #9. Could that be....Him?

After that point the Ghost Rider takes on the Hulk (#10-11), the Phantom Eagle (#12), the Trapster (#13), and the Orb (#14), as he ends up in Hollywood as a movie stuntman and gets romantically involved with the actress Karen Page. This explains why Daredevil pops up at the end of this collection. By the time we get to the point where the Ghost Rider is fighting Spider-Man, the Thing, Hercules and a bunch of other superheroes in Hell to try and rescue the mysterious Jesus-like figure and save Karen (#18), "Ghost Rider" has jumped a whole lot more than the shark. Writer Tony Isabella creates one of the most convoluted storylines of all time and when the Son of Satan returns to help our hero (#17) trying to figure out what it all means is just not worth the effort. However, of the artists that replaced Ploog I have to say that Frank Robbins did give the book a unique look and his name should be included on the cover instead of Herb Trimpe (Robbins drew four issues included here and George Tuska three, while Trimpe just did the Son of Satan origin).

"Essential Ghost Rider Volume 1" collects together "Marvel Spotlight" #5-12, "Ghost Rider" #1-20, and "Daredevil" #138, which is the penultimate story in the collection because it is a crossover with "Ghost Rider" #20. Also, "Marvel Spotlight" #12 ends up being another crossover because Ghost Rider has his own comic book at that point and the spotlight is now on "The Son of Satan." Chances are that is one Marvel comic book that is not going to get the Essentials treatment, so this may well be the only time you see this "Ominous Origin Issue!" reprinted. In case you were wondering, yes, "Ghost Rider" was better than "The Son of Satan," a note on which I have to end.

Like all of the Marvel essentials, it's a lot of material for a low price. But it's in black and white and a really low quality paper. It's worth buying if you want to check the origins of Ghost Rider and not pay too much for it.

First off, Eisner does a great job of combining visual elements with his text in this book. The whole thing is illustrated with cavemen working on their storytelling technique, and I have to admit that the cavemen illustrations were great fun and always helped to clarify the how side of what he was saying in the text. Beautifully done. (Yes, I know, this is like saying, "Hey, y'know that Hemingway guy? Some of his stories were really good.")

Does it have any issues? Yes. It's 164 heavily illustrated pages. You can read it in an afternoon. And some of the illustrative pieces feel over-long for the point they are trying to prove. I hit the point on a couple of them where I found myself saying, "Yes, I get it. We needed the X in the beginning so we would understand Y now. Can we move on?" I also felt that, at 164 pages, he didn't really have the opportunity to go into depth on some areas. There's a point where he provided two bad examples of a comic script... and no good example. Aaaaah!

Even with those issues in mind, I have to give the book 4 caped crime-fighters out of five. It's well-written (though there are also some grammatical gaffs that make me want to scream), it's engaging, and it's instructive. Worth the read.

Useful tips for the beginner artists

[[VIDEOID:31057701]]Telling a good story is an incredibly difficult. In this book, Will Eisner shares with readers some of things to be aware of when tackling storytelling using comics.

He talks about techniques to use to help build a more convincing story. This would include comic tools like lettering, building momentum, using visual clues and writing. Examples include how props (i.e. guns) are held to reveal human characteristics.

There are lessons on how to engage readers, how readers think and mistakes to avoid. These are followed with lots of comic strip examples -- including a selection from different comic artists. Unfortunately, they aren't captioned page by page like it was done on his other books. The comic examples are great, you know it but you don't know why they work.

The book doesn't really go in depth into all aspects of storytelling. There's no talk on character development, story arcs, conflict management and specific story elements and tools.

Overall, this is still a very useful book for anyone who's just starting out and thinking of drawing their own comics.

Good...but so close to being great.

I'm not a big fan of strategy guides. They tend to be written as if talking to a 3 year old. However I was so in love with Rise of Nations to get my fill I needed more info on the game and this manual provided it. It incorporates all aspects of the game from multiplayer to the CTW campaign. The writer does a great job interlacing all the rare resource info, wonder info, unit info to specific civilizations in order maximize the efficency of your play. Great tips like how to "Age Jump" as well as perform hit and run attacks with light calvary ar invaluable in disrupting AI and Human opponents. What I really liked was the fact that he used his experience from playing only on the toughest difficulty levels to provide only top notch strategies.
I do feel there were a few aspects of this book that hindered it's drive to being a great strategy guide. The military chapters are very broad. Very few specific general tactics are described. The ones he does put forth are extremely helpful but it would have been nice to see charts or details on what he felt armies should be comprised of at different unit totals. Unfortunately we just get a broad stroke over that topic. It would have been neat to get a solid of idea what he felt the perfect "raiding army" or "seige army" should be comprised of.
My second complaint (if you can even call it that) is more info on building your nations. While he explains very nicely about city placement and the benifits of placing mines and mills in certian locations I would have liked a more analytical view of where to place buildings within the city to provide better defense/offense so on and so forth. I guess its just a minor complaint.
The highlight of the book is probably his explainations of using the functions that a lot of people overlook like the use of spies, commandos, militia, and early scouting techniques.
Overall a fantastic book, I highly reccommend it.

A Must Have With Rise of Nations!

When I purchased this book, I was sort of expecting to see things that where sort of obvious, but I was wrong. This book gives you a thorough view of all of the civilizations, the weaknesses and stregths, the bonuses, and so much more! It also explains tons of other things in the game, such as your military, etc. It also has an entire chapter on strategies, such as rushing, booming, and needle and hammer.
If you plan to purchase Rise of Nations, or you already own it, then you need to purchase this book. If you want to play the game to the fullest, then this book is the key. Not only will it give you better gaming for Rise of Nations, but it will help you win games!
