The standard by which 'hard' sf should be judged

By intelligently (and often humorously) deflating many conventions and cliches of sf, the author reminds us that it is, first and foremost, a literature of ideas and not an escapist genre. In this collection of short stories, we follow protagonist Pirx through his training as a cadet and go along with him on a few routine space flights, most of them plagued by red tape. Lem seems to almost take glee in de-glamorizing space travel, but the fact remains that something about it fascinates and terrifies us, as it does his character Pirx. The truth of the matter, as the author so deftly illustrates in these tales, is that space is a void. The only thing that makes it come alive as a place of adventure or peril is the human imagination, which puts our hero Pirx in more jeopardy than any naturally occuring dangers. _Tales of Pirx the Pilot_ ranks as a top-notch book because, like all good sf, it does not allow a reader to run away from reality but makes one confront it thoughtfully

Oddly Fascinating Space Adventures

This collection of stories by Lem is based around a chubby cadet by the name of Pirx. The character is plucky and gets into all sorts of fixes. I found the first short story the most surprising and fun to read. It's most vivid antagonist are two insects, and it's wildly creative. Another very good story is this one about a robot re-living over and over the last few hours before the death of an entire ship (this was before Pirx's time). A very haunting tale. Overall, a great collection!

Lem's Pirx is compelling and cool. The science is barely fictional and always thought provoking. The plots, however, are a little more predictable than the sequel. If you're going to read one of these, I'd recommend "More".

This book is hands down one of the best books I have ever read. The structure and choice of metaphors also serve for Lavoe White's purpose of attacking morality,human nature and spirituality which can arguably be seen as being at the heart of the novel. Lavoe takes the reader on a journey of highs and lows that keep you on the edge of your seat. Throughout the entire book I was on a journey from the Smallwood Plantation to the present day. While reading this book, I fell in love, cried, hurt and every emotion in between. This is a MUST read. I can't wait for Lavoe White's next literary work!!

I have enjoyed every book she has written so far. I was not surprised by the exceptional story or awesome writing. This is truly a book that any and everyone could read and truly enjoy. My daughter read the book in one night, a friend contacted me when she was done & gave it rave reviews too. I read it slow because I knew it was going to good & like her other books you don't want it to end. Don't sleep on this one & you will not once you began(member of The Pageturnners Bookclub STL)

About the Author

Robert W. Bauman holds a Ph.D. in Biology from Stanford University, an M.A. in Botany from the University of Texas at Austin, and a B.A. in Biology from the University of Texas at Austin. He is a full professor of biology in the Department of Biological Sciences at Amarillo College in Amarillo, Texas, where he previously served as department chair. He has been teaching microbiology and human anatomy and physiology since 1988, and was a recipient of the John. F. Mead Faculty Excellence Award, nominated by the students of Amarillo College. Dr. Bauman is an active member of the American Society of Microbiology (ASM), Texas Community College Teacher’s Association (TCCTA), the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), and the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS).

It is very well written and easy to read

If you are taking microbiology or just want to learn something new, definitely get this textbook. It is very well written and easy to read. There are plenty of neat pictures and interest information for your mind to absorb. Oh! And I should also mention that I aced my microbiology class with this textbook!

Very useful information that I needed and searched everywhere to find. Thank you Amazon for offering me a Student Prime Membership that had this exact book I needed for my Microbiology course which came with an excellent price and reasonable due date to return my rented book. About the Author

James Crawford is Whewell Professor of International Law and a Fellow of Jesus College in the University of Cambridge and concurrently Research Professor of Law at LaTrobe University. He previously held chairs at Adelaide and Sydney. He is a Senior Counsel (NSW) and also a member of the English bar, practicing from Matrix Chambers. He was the first Australian member of the United Nations International Law Commission and was responsible for the ILC's work on the International Criminal Court (1992-4) and for the second reading of the ILC Articles on State Responsibility (1997-2001). In addition to scholarly work on statehood, collective rights, investment law and international responsibility, he has appeared frequently before the International Court of Justice and other international tribunals, and is engaged as expert, counsel and arbitrator in international arbitration. From 1995-2003 and from 2006-10 he was Director of the Lauterpacht Centre for International Law in the University of Cambridge.

Bottom Line Up Front: The Word prayed = Prayer answered

With possible exception of classic "US and Brit lit" novels (and not many of those!), I've never been one to rush to get books with lots of pages and that goes for bible studies too. But like the Bible itself, Louis McCall's new book is a rich meal that can be experienced by many types of readers in many different ways. And it's all good. For those saved for many years like myself, it's a reminder "not to be lazy" ...that the Word of God is a Precious Gift ...a key to be used and a weapon to wield Every Day regardless of how busy we get. But even for the New Believer, I love that Louis immediately de-mystifies the subject of prayer so that they no longer see it as some impossible task. Instead, Chapter 1, paragraph 1 says it loud and clear: the Word of God is the Will of God ; praying in line with the Word helps them know their Heavenly Father's heart in a deeper way and partner with Him to bring Heaven on Earth for their benefit and others.

So don't think that you have to "boil the ocean" in one sitting....NO! Study and think about a Chapter a day, or a paragraph in a Chapter a day, or maybe just read one of Louis' personal stories and memorize 1-associated scripture (and if KJV isn't your style, compare with the NKJV, NIV, Message, or some other bible version). However you do it and no matter where you are in your relationship with Jesus, just start ...and get ready to get "strong in the Lord and the power of His Might! (Ephesians 6:10-13)

What's great about this book is that there are one liners ...

Format: The format of the book is decisive- everything is ordered (generally) in terms of scripture, what to draw from it and a personalization section. What's great about this book is that there are one liners that guide your thinking before you read the next passage. However, sometimes, I find it hard to keep track of one thought at a time or I find myself needing to put down the book and look up the scriptures every so often to stay in line with the thought process that could sometimes be more explicitly written out. Format 3.8/5

Content: Regarding the contents of the book, on the surface, one can easily make the general conclusion that this is a book solely on prayer or can come across like a self-help book where the author is giving personal anecdotes to assist in the general area of prayer or strengthening of prayer life. However, I would disagree with that. I think that the author makes it very clear from chapter 1 that prayer is not just knowing and seeking the will of God but also knowing who he is. I think that while the anecdotes point towards what seems to be prayer oriented, it uses scripture to reinforce who God is and what should our expectations of him be as the central focus to guide the reader before application. I would say that this is a book that a beginner would have a bit trouble with thinking through faith, favor, love and all a lot of terms as they are spoken in a Christian-nese way (in a Christian context). Everyone needs this book in their resource arsenal!

Will Power is knowing Gods will for you,and by praying and decreeing it....brings power! That's what this book is about. Louis skillfully crafted this book with that in mind. Praying and freeing Gods promises to us counter-attacks and sets up a firewall of protection and power from the bombardment of "lies & untruths" that try to render us ineffective and weak. Know who we are, and who's we are in the scriptures, is the theme throughout Louis's book and he makes it easy to "put up your dukes" in the Spirit and add scriptural power to your prayer! Great job Louis for helping us to not praying according to our feelings and emotions but using the sword of the Spirit skillfully and effectively! Every one needs this book in their resource arsenal!
