Johnston provides us with laughs and tears over the years

Johnston, having written for what seems to be a lifetime already, continues the story of the loveable "For Better or For Worse" family that many countries have come to love and treasure. One of the only 'real' families in comics, Johnston cleverly and eloquently mixes pain and laughter --- succinctly paraphrasing much of life.
"What, Me Pregnant?" is another chapter of the "For Better or For Worse" saga, with Elly finding herself pregnant... at 40! Her other kids in high school and preparing to go to college, this is unexpected and delightful for the fans of the series. This book tracks Elly's pregnancy and continues the personal tales of the other family members as they grow up -- and grow older. A wonderful book that will have you glued to the pages until the end.

April was the little surprise that invigorated the series! She continues to be a main stay even when the story line goes to Michael, but this book was excellent.

About the Author

Robert W. Ottman , deceased, an internationally renowned music theorist, was an important contributor to Music Theory education. He wrote eight textbooks and co-authored four others, all which are used to educate English-speaking students worldwide. Dr. Ottman also was a professor and chair of the Music Theory Department at the University of North Texas and a conductor of the Madrigal Singers. He earned both his BA and MM from Eastman School of Music, University of Rochester, NY, and his Ph.D. from what is now the University of North Texas in 1956. He was honored with the University of North Texas President's Citation for outstanding service to the university in April 2004. 

 

Nancy Rogers is an Assistant Professor of Music Theory at Florida State University and the current Secretary of the Society for Music Theory; she is also a Faculty Reader and Consultant for the Advanced Placement Test in Music Theory. She received her Ph.D. from the Eastman School of Music, where she won both school-wide and university-wide teaching awards. Dr. Rogers' primary research interest is music cognition and its pedagogical implications, and she has presented papers at national, international, and regional conferences. Her recent publications may be found in Music Theory Online, the Journal of Music Theory Pedagogy, and Indiana Theory Review.

Great book

If you want to work on your sight singing skills this book will come in very handy.

Alot of colleges use this book in their music theory courses at least the musicianship portion that is.

This version is thicker than newer versions meaning you get more lines to practice from... downside being when an assignment is given you wont know which it really is but you can always check a neighbors and find it in this version that way.

If youre not currently enrolled in a theory/musicianship course Id say buy this version because its cost will be (most likely) greatly reduced

The definitive guide, for beginners and avid players

The first moment I opened up this book, I know it will be more than just a guide. It is informative, teach you more than what you should know, and encourage you to do better than what they can offer. They writers of this guide did a great job in creating a very detailed and thorough guide for Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3.

First, the introductions. I know most of us will skip the intro and go straight to the characters that we want to learn more. But believe me, take your time to read the introductions. They talked about the cultures in Marvel vs. Capcom 3, like how people started to play as Sentinel, how Phoenix gains popularity in the gaming community, brief but useful insight about some famous fighters and more. You'll learn some thing about the gaming culture, especially in fighting games community. It's too interesting for you to skip it.

Then come the system and gameplay. It talks about the modes that you can play (arcade, training, mission, ranked match etc). It also explains in depth about the system in the game like guarding, X-Factor, advanced guard, team aerial combo, team hyper combo, frames, crossover counter and more. If you are new, you should definitely read these first, as it will improve your knowledge about the gameplay a lot. Even if you are already good in MvC3, I suggest you read it too, because there might be some information that you never knew before. There's never a downside on knowing more.

The part that most people are looking for will probably be the individual character guides. The characters are divided into the new, old, and DLC, and in each grouping they are arranged in alphabetical order, with Marvel characters first then Capcom's side. I don't know why I explain this, as you can always check the index -_- but never mind!

Looking at the characters' guide, they are very detailed and arranged. There will be a brief introduction about a character's style (like Zero is meant to maintain a constant pressure, and Hawkeye is a keep-away character etc), giving you the basic ideas on how you can expect to use a character. Also, they explained the changes made for old characters, and how it affect their style. Then come the basic attacks and command attacks (what does the light, medium, heavy and special button do for each character). The movesets for each characters are also given, which they describe it in details like how or when to use it, whether the move is depending on a certain situation or will it be a great tool for a character, the use in long combos, or even if the move is useless (life Dante's Revolver, which they said is overshadowed by his other more useful moves). This time, compared to previous MvC3 guides, they also gave details on each character's assist moves, and discuss the usefulness of the assists.

The battle plan for individual characters are the most useful if you want to get better with a character. In short, it discusses on how to use a character effectively, what are their weakness and advantages, and maybe the right kind of assist to use with. Advanced tactics explains further on more specific way to use a character in a situation, utilizing their advantages (like Zero's best move to use in the corner to pressure the enemy). They also includes several combos for each character, which prove more practical (but not all are easy to execute!) to use in battles.

Even if you don't plan to use all off the characters, you'll definitely benefit more by reading about them. By that, you can expect how to counter other players play style and know what to expect (for example if you are against Phoenix players, better players will know that they will reserve their meter to make Phoenix turn into Dark Phoenix, so it's easier to expect what your tactics will be like removing their meter, bring out Phoenix and take her down as soon as possible etc)

Having this guide doesn't mean you will definitely become better. Just like a textbook, you need to read and study it! I know, why the hell should you want to study about game. School and colleges are bad enough as they are (unless if you are having a good time in school/college, then I envy you). But the different is that you can put what you learn in the guide into practice in the game. Unlike most learning in real life, there is none, if not rare, chance that you can apply what you learn. (I'm taking video games and learning class right now, so pardon the serious talk about learning -_-"). You still need to practice a lot if you want to get better in this game, no doubt about that. You know you are getting better if you can execute a combo without being conscious, as in you are not trying so hard to remember the inputs.

So, to put it in a more arranged way:

Pros
- The authors are very conscious and informed about what is going on with current fighting game culture
- Very detailed in discussing gameplay and system
- Very detailed in explaining each characters' abilities, strategies and movesets
- Not ignoring the changes in old characters, and updated their combos and strategies
- Pictures included, making it easier for readers to understand (and you can stare at your favorite characters all day long...yeah...er what?)
- Still interesting to read even when you don't plan on learning anything specific

Cons
- No guides for missions. To be fair, the game already provides what you need to do in the mission. The main problems are your timing and your knowledge about the mechanics (especially the cancels). The writers said in the guide that you can do well in the missions if you take your time to learn using the guide. Also, Youtube videos like VesperArcade's can help you a lot with the missions.
- Having need to study. Well, you can't expect to become better just by reading it. Play around using the Training mode, experiment with characters, battle with players in Player Match or lobby, utilize the Spectator mode in lobby and watch videos from other players.

If you are looking forward to become a better UMvC3 player, then this guide will proves to be useful to you. I highly recommend it to both newcomers and experienced players.

The Ultimate Guide!

The Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 Guide from Brady Games is absolutely wonderful. This 600 page monster has so much great information, I would recommend it to any person, of any skill level, amateur to tournament level player, to improve their understanding of this game, and really take their fighting prowess to the next level. I received a copy of this book directly from the author/publisher in exchange for an honest review.

This was an amazingly fun, light-hearted read filled with snarky imaginary friends, a pirate princess, lost treasure, and loads of sexual tension. When I picked up Desert Sheikh vs American Princess, I wasn’t sure what I was getting into. I expected your usual formulaic girl meets foreign prince sort of story that has been done a thousand times, and in some ways, that’s what it was--and that’s fine. I like formulaic romance. It’s cosy and familiar, and when all you want is to sit down and read a book that’s going to make you feel good, it’s a great way to fill that need.—but that isn’t all that this story was. There was humor, sexual tension, romance, friendship, and daring escapades.

The characters were fantastic—I loved each and every one of them, especially Bonnie Read, the 11-year-old imaginary friend of the lead character. It was fun to get to see Noelle’s inner child reach out and try her hardest to remind her of who she was (and also get her into a ton of trouble). The sheikh held dominance without being domineering, and though a little slow to warm up, was an all around great guy, and the perfect male lead for Noelle. Noelle herself was equal parts Bonnie—adventurous and rebellious—and her father’s daughter… clever and business savvy. I loved all of them, even the minor characters, and those that were meant to be enemies.

The writing was fluid, clean, and easy to read with the exception of a few minor typos I found here and there, but nothing too jarring as to distract from the story overall. The narrative was fast paced and gripped my attention, and before I knew it, the book was over in a matter of a few hours.

I have to say, overall, I loved the book, and I didn’t expect to. I thought it was going to be yet another formulaic read—nothing special. Instead, I found a hilariously funny read filled with steamy sex, endearing characters, and a fun pirate adventure waiting for me. I couldn’t be more pleased. If you’re looking for a fun, fast-paced romance I would highly recommend that you pick this book up and give it a try.

Sheikh Walid al Kalam and Noelle Oldrich..... don't miss this!

Teresa Morgan – Jewels of the Desert Series - #2; Desert Sheikh vs. American Princess

Sheikh Walid al Kalam is a strong closed off leader and he will not open up to no one. His father taught him to focus on his job and nothing else, even though his father was not an honest or honorable man Walid was just the opposite. Now Walid is the leader and he owes his country and their people but now he has a problem, Walid gave Noelle Oldrich hotel magnate father, Winston Oldrich, $50M to build a high end hotel in Askar to bring in more tourism. Noelle’s father did not build the hotel and isn’t giving back the money. Walid decided to kidnap Noelle until her father pays. Otherwise he will not have the money for the next payment on the pipeline being built.

During the weeks of Noelle’s sequester, in a beautiful palace with servants at her disposable, her only goal is to escape and get back to America. She knows that her father isn’t going to pay the ransom so she had to get out of there. Noelle is not a passive person and becomes very disruptive destroying Walid’s peace and focus on the pipeline. Noelle is told a story about the legendary a jewel, the Palm of Askar. Noelle believes that she and her child hood pirate princess will help her find the “X”. Together Noelle and the pirate princess, in her head, believe they can find the jewel and gain her freedom.

Walid and Noelle are drawn to each other like magnets, but both know that it would not lead to anything long-term. What happens if Noelle finds the jewel, what happens if she doesn’t? Find out!!

What didn’t work?
• The entire imaginary pirate princess theme and dialog. It became very annoying to me after 2 paragraphs of dialog. It would have been better (at least for me) that Noelle had a back ground in puzzles, maps, finding things, something other than dialogs of pirate speak.

• In chapter 1, the book states that is was Walid’s father who gave Winston Oldrich the $50M, but later the references is Walid gave it to him. If Walids father left the country in dept and Walid is trying to fix this problem, why does the book change to Walid giving the money for the luxury hotel?

Who wins in the end?

DESERT SHEIKH VS. AMERICAN PRINCESS
This is a YA romance, although it may have some explicit sex that a younger teenager might not be ready for. Walid, the Sheikh of three small Arab countries, is in financial difficulty. His father had been a spendthrift, leaving Walid in a financial bind. This was increased because of a loan to an American for $50,000 to build a hotel, which was not built nor was the loan repaid. Attempting to put some pressure on this man, Walid kidnapped his daughter, Noelle, feeling this would guarantee payment of the loan. Noelle had free run of Walid’s royal abode, but there was always someone watching her. Noelle knew that her father would never pay the loan back as he never was interested in the welfare of his daughter. Noelle had a wild streak in her, and she would try anything, even if it might be a little dangerous. As the days passed, romance blossomed between Walid and Noelle, and they grew to adore each other. However, Walid still has to find the funds for his country, and he is considering marrying an Arab girl whose dowry will more than cover his financial problem. Noelle is very much against this and continually nags Walid about this, even though she understands why he is doing this.
This a light read, with a little romance, sex, escapades, and humor. It also had Noelle being mentally guided by an imaginary eleven old child, which added nothing to the story, and it is puzzling why the author felt this was needed. This is a fast and enjoyable read and might be a little immature for older romance readers.
