Tales of Numenor and of Middle Earth History

Unfinished Tales came out in the Fall of 1980, much to everyone’s surprise. This book contains many tales that were briefly mentioned in the form of lays in The Lord of the Rings (LOTR), and one story, Narn i Hin Hurin, the longest in this book, expands the story of Turan Turambar in The Silmarillion, telling it in its completion, to which Chapter 21, Of Turin Turmabar, is but the middle and end of the story. This later came out as one complete book, The Children of Hurin. Another story, Of Tuor and His Coming to Gondolin, is sort of a preface to The Silmarillion’s “Of Tuor and the Fall of Gondolin.”
This book is divided into four sections, covering the First, Second, and Third Age of Middle Earth, with Part Four being extra information, especially the history of wizards (Istari), the Druedain (with a fable as a bonus), and the history of the palantirs.
In a sense, these are unfinished tales, where some break off, others give more than one version, with notes from the editor (Christopher Tolkien) at the end of each story. Sometimes, you, the reader have to decide the ending. The main point is that this book tries to give an expanded history of Middle Earth with stories either briefly mentioned in The Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion, or, and this is better, tell stories of set in certain times and places where the reader never before expected.
One tale is of Numenor, of a Mariner who loved the sea, but is also an heir to the Numenorean throne. He marries a woman who never wants to leave her land, and resents her husband going to sea all the time, leading to a lot of strife between the couple. At the end of the story, and here, you must read the notes, is revealed why, and has quite a surprise ending.
Another story covers Amroth and Nimrodel, told as a poem or song by Legolas in The Fellowship of the Ring, while the fellowship was in Lothlorien, but laid out in great detail here. There are stories mentioned in the trilogy that are more detailed that would otherwise have gone unnoticed by many readers of the LOTR trilogy. One chapter can serve as a prologue to The Hobbit, where Gandalf meets up with Thorin Oakenshield before going to The Shire to meet unsuspecting Bilbo Baggins, and there is mention of how Smaug must be destroyed before Sauron makes use of him in his scheme for world domination. This is mentioned in The Hobbit movie, so you can see that Peter Jackson has taken material out of this book for both The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. Here, I would recommend that you save this chapter and read it before you read, or reread, The Hobbit.
Other stories include the origins of Galadriel and Celeborn, and why they remained in Middle Earth for three ages, and stories of the Third Age, left out of The Lord of the Rings, but could have been in the appendices, such as the origins of Rohan and its people, the Hunt for the Ring, and Gollum.
In Part Four, there are three pieces of history, one being the history of the order of the wizards, and how Saruman, despite his position has head of his order, became jealous, leading to his downfall. As a bonus, the two blue wizards, whom you never meet, are named and is said that they went into the East of Middle Earth, where the reader never ventures.
These stories do appear to be unfinished, but they do give out enough information to entertain the reader and give him a better understanding of the history of Middle Earth, leading to a better understand of the trilogy, and also the movies, especially The Hobbit.
I do recommend that you read in between the lines. That is, the small print because you will catch a few fables of the three ages, reflecting not only Middle Earth, but individuals previously unknown, being both humans and elves, and places you normally would never go, or imagine.
This book is definitely worth adding to your Tolkien library, and worth multiple readings along with The Silmarillion and The Hobbit, as well as the trilogy.

Most critics agreed that Khaled Hosseini's second novel is as devastating, if not even more powerful, than his first. A natural, if not always the most eloquent or subtle, storyteller, Hosseini gives voice to two women trying to survive in a despotic household while caught up in the throes of war. Most critics thought that Hosseini successfully evokes his female characters' inner lives—not an easy feat for a male author—while a few observed that Mariam and Laila fail to resonate emotionally. Others noted some melodrama and predictability. Despite these quibbles, the novel offers a chilling, all-too-real portrait Afghan life. "It is, for all its shortcomings, a brave, honorable, big-hearted book" (Washington Post).

To be honest, I didn't think I would finish this book. I got through perhaps the first 50 pages and thought, there is no way I can finish this. I got through the first 100 pages and thought, I definitely will have to stop reading this. But, as you can see, I did finish it, and feel compelled to rate it 5 stars.

This is *not* light reading. It is extremely heart-wrenching from start to finish. (I would also say that, if you are a survivor of domestic violence, be prepared for very descriptive passages of beatings, rape, strangulation, isolation, and other horrific abuse.) From the horrors of abuse to the horrors of war, this book does not leave any dark part of the human heart unexplored. And that is why it is so difficult to read.

At the same time, it was not a book I could give up on. The character dynamics in the book are so complex that, after a while, they truly seemed like real people. The enduring power of Mariam's spirit is, all at once, beautiful, inspiring, and heartbreaking. And, even in a time of war, love and friendship ultimately survive.

This story also gives some insight to Western readers about what Afghanistan was like, pre-9/11.

I highly recommend this book and will be reading more by this author.

Awe-inspiring, a work of art

I don't think I can put into words the effect this book had on me. The harshness of life in Afghanistan, especially for women, is written with such love, such gentleness, and such compassion that it takes the reader through the most tragic events without manipulation or excess. That in itself is remarkable. But the author's depth of understanding is beyond extraordinary. I came away with a knowledge about so many important things in life. If you find it hard to empathize with this culture, if you find it hard to comprehend the depth of its complexity, I urge you to read this book. My heart broke a thousand times, but I came away with gratitude and a sense of connection I never thought would be possible. Beautiful, beautiful work.

The BEST Book I Read This Year! Overall Top 10!!

I'm more of a thriller, mystery, true crime reader but a friend of mine kept insisting that I read this book and I'm soo thankful to her! This book is an Amazing read! It's a tale of both devastation and hope...love and loss. I knew a lot of the background history of the war in Afghanistan/Soviet occupation from a documentary I watched on Massoud but I never realized how life was for the ordinary individual especially for women in Afghanistan at the time. Khaled Hosseini gives such a intimate insight into the reality of the lives of women during this time through his characters Mariam and Laila. The strength of the characters is unparalleled as they struggle to get by in a world that makes them feel beyond unwanted. I could go on but I just recommend this to everyone. You'll develop a new appreciation for life! Warning: have tissues near by!

Great book for learning to weld

I'm taking a welding class at the local junior college. The instructor said this text is optional because he covers everything he needs us to know in lecture. The lectures cover some things that are not in this book but, conversely, the book covers a lot that is not in the lectures!! This is a "numbers" book with detail on different kinds of welding rods, different welding gasses and when to use what. It is written at about a junior high level and does have some repetition but that's not really a problem. I find that by reading this before class, I am better able to understand and remember the classroom material. I was able to get mine used and that put the cost at a more reasonable level. I'll keep this after the class is over because the charts are a good reference.

The book I need, the book i don't deserve...

Great info. Very good for class and learning. Not very good for much else, I've tried to teach my book some tricks. To my surprise, it was very independent; going out late without inviting me, eating dinner alone, ect. Sometimes i wonder why I ever bought this book at all.

Simple Philosophies, Outstanding Results

I've read many self help books. Some of them have been slightly helpful. The majority of them, whilst well written, have been nothing but hot air, penned by an author who's main priority was to get to your wallet with shallow advice, and not to your soul with fruitful results.
This book defied everything I had ever come to believe of self help books.
Huna has been around for a long time, and it's philosophies of dealing with yourself, mainly your conscious and unconscious mind, are like nothing I have encountered before.
After putting the methods into practice, I can happily say that I have overcome negative thoughts, which I had been dealing with for most of my adult life, within a matter of weeks. The most startling thing is that I have only just begun, yet have made more progress by implementing Huna's methods of dealing with my subconscious mind than I have in the last 10 years put together.
The non chalant way that Serge Kahili King writes is also a pleasure to read. He knows that something as simple as a book will not solve all of your life's problems, but he is there to support you and be a fence sitter along the way, neither condeming any other form of self development or promoting one over the other. It's this unbaised view of life that makes you sit up and take notice.
I strongly recommend that for anyone that is interested in making a difference to their lives, particularly one filled with negativity, to read this book.
The methods involved are simple, and can be used daily, for as little as 20 minutes, or for further 'Gains' much more.

De-mystification

This guy basically explains how rituals and religious faith healing actually works. He doesn't try to convert you to some "Huna" religion. He just kind of uses that as a base to start at. This book's all about the subconscious mind. He shows you how to communicate with your own subconscious.
