Novelist, short story writer, poet, and columnist, Miljenko Jergovi? is a literary phenomenon whose writing is celebrated throughout Europe. His poetry collection Warsaw Observatory received the Goran Prize for young poets and the Mak Dizdar Award and his landmark collection of stories Sarajevo Marlboro received the Erich Maria Remarque Peace Prize. Mama Leone won the highly regarded Premio Grinzane Cavour for the best foreign book in Italy in 2003. His other works include Ruta Tannenbaum, The Walnut House, Buick Riviera, and Father. Stela Tomasevic was born in Belgrade in 1963. She studied literature at the University of East Anglia. She has translated numerous works of non-fiction from the Bosnian and the French. Astounding, outstanding

Literally dozens upon dozens of books have been written on the war in Bosnia and the break-up of Yugoslavia by journalists, scholars, diplomats, politicians, etc. both from the former Yugoslavia itself and abroad. However, hardly any of them shed as much light on the war in Bosnia (and, by extension, the recent tragic events throughout former Yugoslavia) as this slim volume. Jergovic has made an art-form of capturing so much feeling, passion and depth in such incredibly short stories. "Sarajevo Marlboro" can definitely be ranked among the great world literature of the last few decades. This is an outstanding book - read it by all means.

One of the best books about war in Bosnia

When Jergovic's book Sarajevo Marlboro was published in Croatia I thought here it is, another so called writer who wants to make money out of people's tragedy. But then, I met him and has been surprised. Man like him just can't be one of those nationalist writers in which books every second word is the name of his country. He thinks and he has great talents with words. Sarajevo Marlboro is mosaic made of two-three pages stories that point directly to your heart. Jergovic understand perfectly well what is going on in his city, to his fellow citizens and though he can't do anything to stop the history, he can remeber it - in his own voice. And that is the beauty of Sarajevo Marlboro.

Only special people find humor in a tragedy

Jergovic has written a book full of life, full of laugh and despair. No one else like Bosnians - with this I mean anyone living a true life of a person in Bosnia - can make jokes on their own sad history and present. Some stories in this book are by far the best short stories I have read in my life and I recommend this book to everyone, especially to politicians who allowed that this humor almost disappears. Bravo Miljenko!

Amazing story, but overpowered with repetitious sex.

Trigger Warning: Domestic Violence. While this book doesn't engage in DV and is about overcoming the trauma, it revisits past agony and assault. I'm not guessing this may or may not trigger someone who has lived through a similar situation; I am someone who was triggered while reading. So if you aren't healed enough to deal, or want a book where you're not thrust in your past, please give this book a pass.

With all that being said, I thought the domestic violence thread of the book was done with great compassion, understanding, and realism. For a survivor who has traveled far enough in their journey of healing, they will find comfort in portions of the book. 5 stars on the way this delicate issue was handled.

What He Left Behind was a scorching HOT read. I was drawn instantly, knowing where the book was going to go, but couldn't stop myself from reading. I was shocked at the dynamic between the men. A happily married couple, and their friend who is dealing with the aftermath of an abusive relationship. All three men are very mature and understanding in their situation. There are no miscommunications, misunderstandings, or unnecessary angst. It was very adult.

Where the book didn't work for me: every scene became repetitious after the beginning, to the point there were no scenes involving anything but sex. Perhaps a mention of everyday life, but it would devolve to sex again in the exact same formula. Even a highly emotional scene would devolve to getting off. It was 10% storyline at this point and 90% sex the reader had already had a bird's eye view into. I wanted more of that 10%, because is was a outstanding 10%.

Less is more. Make me earn it, hunger for it. Seduce me (the reader) as if I were a character in the story. Don't just put out constantly on every page, or I won't appreciate you and I'll take you for granted.

In the beginning of the book, that book that was so scorching hot was replaced with similar scenes that I skimmed. The hard-hitting honesty of the very real after-effects of domestic violence was lessened by sex. The emotional aspects (& I did get emotional over and over while reading this book as the author was very gifted at tearing emotions out of me) were negated by the overuse of sex as the vehicle to push the story, when the story would have been more than capable to drive and navigate.

The domestic violence, the aftermath, the emotions involved during this type of arrangement, and the very real feelings the three men experienced, were written with a great amount of compassion, understanding, and realism... the excess of sex cheapened something that could have been a profound read.

I know I'm coming off as a prude. I mean, 20+ scenes of similar nature, involving the same characters, set up, and formula, no matter what the content involves, will become repetitious, redundant, and drag a story down.

There was something I couldn't put my finger on, and it just now came to me. There was little to no conflict in the story. Everyone was so understanding. The entire time I was reading the book I was waiting for the abusive ex to reappear for some reason, giving all three men a feeling of vindication. It wasn't until I was finished reading and read another review that I realized this never transpired. & I feel it was necessary to keep the book from having the same feel from start to end- no rise, fall, or crescendo.

Would I recommend this title: YES. Hell, yes! M/M erotica fans will go insane for the between the sheets actions. However, M/M romance and contemporary fans may be put off a bit as what they are longing to have more of is pushed beneath the bed the characters are using, over and over again.

Would I read more by this author: Yes, absolutely. I'd give this author a few more tries.

Quite entertaining/interesting twist on handling of PTSD - 4,5 stars

Josh and Ian have been happily married for a decade. They have a friend, Michael, who has been through a rough experience that left him in tatters.

Michael and Josh have been friends since forever. They have been each other's first experience, but they seemed never to be on the same page, so when Josh met Ian he fell in love and after some (just hinted) problems, they married. They live a quiet life with a rescue dog and a rescue cat. The dog loves everybody and the cat hates Josh, while only tolerating Ian.

Michael had started his relationship with Steve about the same time Josh and Ian married. But unlike their relationship, his was very poisonous. Domestic violence is unacceptable, but still happens too often. Fortunately there are only hints and no details of what has happened to Michael. But it has been serious enough to cost him his dream of becoming a veterinary. He had to settle for less, even if he still works with animals.

Michael confides in Josh about his inability to tolerate physical contact of any kind. It's then Ian proposes to Josh to help Michael. After all they know each other intimately and Michael seems confortable with Josh.

Step by step Michael relaxes and becomes more courageous. But all this puts a strain on Josh. Not quite comfortable with being unfaithful, even if he has his husband's blessing. And then there are his ever present, although slumbering, feelings for Michael.

All this is written from Josh's point of view, so we can only guess what Michael and Ian are thinking. Well, except that Michael is thankful, that much is obvious.

At the end they are planning on buying a larger bed. After all - one cat, two dogs and three men need more space (wink, wink).

It’s been five years since Michael left his abusive boyfriend Steve. Five years of counseling and support from his friends Josh and Ian. Michael has been on some dates in that time, but panics at the thought of getting physical with anyone. His counselor suggests a sex therapist but he is uncomfortable thinking about opening up like that with a stranger. Michael and Josh are best friends that have known each other since they were kids. They were each other’s firsts and slept together on and off until Josh married Ian, but never actually dated. Ian and Josh have been together for ten years. Prior to meeting each other neither had considered long-term monogamy, but they are both committed to their marriage and have a closed relationship.

When Josh tells Ian about Michael’s issues, Ian comes up with an idea that is either brilliant or insane. Believing Josh may be the only one Michael will be comfortable enough to try to get intimate with, Ian encourages Josh to do whatever Michael needs to move on. Even after considering the potential pitfalls of the plan, Josh still isn’t prepared for the emotions and problems that arise. When it seems that Michael is almost ready to give dating a try again and get physical with someone who is not Josh, Ian becomes the perfect person to test that. One of the biggest hurdles that the men failed to consider is what happens when Michael is finally ready to move on?

At first I balked. On the one hand, this whole “sexual healing” situation could spiral out of control in so many ways and could wind up hurting all three men, why would any of them even want to go through with it? On the other hand, the men all love and trust each other at least as friends. Everyone starts off on the same page, with the same goals, so it would seemingly be the best situation to make Michael comfortable. What really won me over to the idea was the open communication, especially between Josh and Ian. The two men have one of the strongest, honest relationships I’ve read in a long time. Little is ever held back between them and they act like rational adults.

I thought L.A. Witt did a great job laying out the story and anticipating the questions and emotions her readers may have. Every time I spotted a potential issue or was wondering what on earth someone was thinking, I found it addressed soon after. The drama never felt manufactured and didn’t get over the top. It flowed naturally from the situation as Josh spends more time in bed with Michael and he becomes conflicted about how he is feeling towards Michael and how it is affecting his marriage even in the small ways such as missing out on time together with Ian. While I would have liked to be in Ian’s head a few times, the story is told strictly from Josh’s POV.

Of course, I can’t leave off without discussing the frequent sex scenes which cover every possible combination between the three men both as couples and as a threesome. L.A. Witt definitely writes sex hot enough to melt your Kindle. Beyond that though is the love, respect and tenderness that is there even when the sex is hard and rough.

This story offered a fresh twist on a m�nage while exploring the different dynamics of friendship, love and marriage and I recommend it to any m/m/m fan.

About the Author
Thich Nhat Hanh is a Vietnamese Buddhist monk. His life long efforts to generate peace and reconciliation moved Martin Luther King, Jr. to nominate him for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1967. He is the founder of Van Hanh Buddhist University in Saigon, and has taught at Columbia University and the Sorbonne. He is the author of Being Peace, The Miracle of Mindfulness, Peace Is Every Step, and 75 other books.

A Perfect Gift for Mother's Day, Which Is Every Day!

By some cosmic coincidence, a copy of this sweet little booklet happened to land in my mail box right on my son's 40th birthday, a day when the vast topic of birth and motherhood was very much on my mind. Since the sender had no idea it was my son's birth date, I took it as a divinely inspired message of appreciation from the Universe!

A Rose for Your Pocket is a short, beautifully composed essay on motherhood by Vietnamese Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh. The title is inspired by a Japanese custom on Mother's Day. If your mother is still alive, you wear a red flower on your pocket or your lapel, proud that you still have your mother. If she is no longer alive, you wear a white flower.

The sparkling Introduction to this booklet is by Betsy Rose, a mother who first met Thich Nhat Hanh at a retreat in Ojai, California, where I happen to live. Mothers everywhere will identify with her honest observations about her spiritual practice after her son was born. She writes:

"My practice was still very new and I was eager to be a perfect spiritual mother to my long-awaited child. Surely the equanimity, patience, and understanding that I developed on the meditation cushion would enable me to create the family of my dreams.

This confidence quickly disappeared. At eighteen months, Matt looked at me coolly, picked up my favorite teacup and smashed it on the sidewalk...I have to say honestly that Thich Nhat Hanh's teachings did not make me the parent of a model Buddha-baby, nor was I constantly imbued with wise speech, equanimity, and mindfulness...Yet the loving and gentle wisdom contained in these pages, and in Thich Nhat Hanh's many other writings, have offered me something even better: acceptance of my, and my child's, humanity, compassion for both our suffering, and a new way of seeing the inevitable disappointments, seeming failures, and sense of inadequacy that is our common lot as parents."

The Introduction is followed by five chapters, consisting of 45 mini pages. Using Buddhist teachings, recollections of his own mother, and rituals from around the world, Thich Nhat Hanh describes our deep interconnectedness with our mothers. Using personal stories of love, struggle, and reconciliation, these writings celebrate the qualities embodied by motherhood.

I consider it a good sign that the first edition of A Rose for Your Pocket sold over 2 million copies around the world and has been translated into several languages; this second edition has three new chapters with meditation practices and ceremonies for reconciliation.

This loving tribute to motherhood fits nicely inside an envelope with a Mother's Day card. Busy mothers can tuck the booklet in a pocket or purse, and turn to it whenever they feel unappreciated! A thoughtful gift for Mother's Day -- and that means any day, for every day should be Mother's Day!

A real good book for whoever think about Mom

Since I still a elementary girl, I was taught how love my parents, how to love Mom.. those things keep growing up in mind. I always think about the best for my Mom, whatever i did, doing and will do it all to make my Mom happiness.
Now, when I reading this book, I felt how terrible i am, I just think about myself about how people admire me that I am a wonderful daughter, and my Mom, the greatest Mom in the world, is always a shadow behind mine and my sister's life...

Be not under bondage

If you've had a Christian marriage that sadly ended in some churches you are looked down upon as contaminated, a failure, not worthy to serve. Dr. Ruckman will punch holes in all these fallacies. This is essential reading for anyone who wants the Biblical Truth, that marriage is a physical relationship, not a set of vows, not a paper from the state, not a ceremony. It's when "flesh joins flesh". If flesh leaves flesh in an affair than the person who was abandoned is no longer under bondage but is free to remarry, but only in the Lord (another saved person). If flesh deserts flesh, that is another reason for divorce. Marriage is not a "sacrament", as the Roman Catholic Papacy teaches. The word "sacrament" is not even a Bible word, nor a Bible doctrine. If you are not Roman Catholic why do you buy into their false doctrines?

Do not let anyone "lord it over God's heritage". The Bible is the most radical book ever written. Challenge your old misconceptions about marriage, divorce, and remarriage and read this booklet by Dr. Ruckman, study it, and buy extra copies to give to other Christian friends who are being told they should feel guilty, ashamed, etc. just because one partner thinks they want something else out of life besides you.

About the Author

Andrew Shahriari earned his Ph.D. in ethnomusicology from Kent State University in 2001. He has published two books, Khon Muang Music and Dance Traditions of North Thailand, by White Lotus Co., Ltd., a Bangkok press, and World Music: A Global Journey (co-authored with Kent State Professor Emeritus, Terry E. Miller), published by Routledge, an American press. His fieldwork experiences have taken him thus far to Thailand, China, Europe, Mexico, and many regions of the United States.

Dr. Shahriari is currently an Assistant Professor at Kent State and Coordinator of Online Programs for Music. Other areas of interest include popular world music, rock music history, East Asian music and culture, music and spirituality, as well as music therapy and autism.

Great subject and content, poor execution.

Well written, informative, authoritative, and relevant. The only reason it does not get 5 stars is that for this price, I would have expected the publisher to use more durable materials and maybe could have made the type a tad larger so old eyes could actually read the book without strain.

About the Author
GONZALO CAMARILLO is the Principal Systems Expert with the Advanced Signaling Research Lab of Ericsson in Helsinki, Finland. He is also a frequent speaker at VoIP conferences and the Ericsson representative in the SIP Forum. He received an M.Sc. degree in Electrical Engineering from Universidad Politecnica de Madrid and another M.Sc. degree, also in Electrical Engineering, from the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm. He is continuing his studies as a Ph.D candidate at Helsinki University of Technology.

This is the best book for who wants to know about SIP initially, especially on what SIP can do conceptually. This book is feasible for everyone that includes executives, managers and engineers. This book also provides very good related information in the Internet Forum.

Well written for absolute beginners

This is a great book for absolute beginners. If you have already read the SIP RFC(s) then this book is clearly not for you, on the other hand if you are an engineer beginning to learn SIP then this could provide a great introduction.

The first few chapters are not about SIP but about telecom, VoIP in general and IETF process. I found that quite useful too.

After having read this book you will be able to understand RFC 3261 much better. This is a fast read, I finished this book in a day when I read it several years ago. This could also be a whirlwind refresher for someone who had once worked on SIP but now wants to brush up for a sales meeting tommorow.

Buy, but double check first that this is what you are looking for

Good book on SIP. Bought it to expand our knowledge of SIP in an Asterisk enviroment.

The initial introduction is a bit too-long. I think that when you buy a book on SIP, you already know IP telephony and alikes works.

Before buying, keep in mind that the book is on SIP, generally speaking, and SIP is used on lots of places, not only on Internet/IP telephony.
